In collaboration between luxury men’s designer label Alfred Dunhill and Glasgow based whisky brand Whyte & Mackay, we introduce a whisky cabinet for the Antarctic explorer in us all. Complete with everything you need to survive a trip to the pole except frostbite and Albatross poo.

Designed with a lockable, oak cantilever hood inlaid with a topographical map of Antarctica, the cabinet also comes complete with a British made lead-crystal water decanter, six crystal whisky glasses, a sterling silver ice tong, hip flask funnel, engraved silver ice bucket, six leather coasters and an engraved silver water jug. Even more special is a very rare 1909 first-edition copy of The Heart of Antarctica written by famous polar explorer Ernest Shackleton after his 1907 attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole.

But this is a whisky cabinet and with such an ode to polar exploration and arguably one of the greatest explorers of all time, only one Scotch would complete the set.

In 2010, three cases of Mackinlay Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky were discovered frozen underneath an Antarctic hut in Cape Royds on Ross Island. Upon excavation they were discovered to have belonged to Ernest Shackleton during his 1907 attempt on the South Pole. The cases are believed to have been safely stored in celebration of reaching (and returning from) the Pole and despite having been frozen for 103 years, were in perfect liquid condition.

Ernest Shackleton (second from left) and his crew after returning from within 97 miles of the South Pole, 1909. A new record at the time.

Today the Mackinlay brand is owned by Whyte & Mackay and in homage to this unique collection and the spirit of Shackleton, the company have a released a limited edition recreation of this unique 19th century Malt. Naturally, our Antarctic explorers whiskey cabinet holds three, one for each case discovered.

The cabinets are made to order and are on sale for an average retail price of USD$56,500 (GBP£35,700 or EU€42,500) each. Alternately individual bottles can be purchased for around USD$165 (GBP£98 or EU€120) each.
