Funky Buddha More Moro

I’ve met a few brand loyalists in my day. They say:

I only drink Brand X. I like it, so why try anything else?

That ain’t me. I like variety. Sure, I have preferences…

I like hoppy beers.
I like tart stuff too.
A rich and roasty porter or stout? Bring it on!
Something super malty like a dubbel or quad? They usually leave me a bit ho-hum, but there a few out there that I really like, so bring those on too.

I’ve found that it pays to keep an open mind because you never know when you’ll stumble upon something fun. And speaking of fun…

Funky Buddah’s More Moro is made with blood oranges, a fruit that I really enjoy. The question is: How does it hold up in an IPA?

I knew that this beer was going to be unusual as soon as I started pouring it. This is not what I’d call a photogenic brew. The deep, red-orange color is interesting, but there’s a serious lack of foam.

While the pour was lackluster, the smell was downright intriguing. You definitely get that blood orange sweetness, but you also get an intense malty sweetness too. The two scents combine to make me think of an orange caramel (does that even exist?), or maybe one of those orange flavored Torrone that I like so much.

The taste of the More Moro is equally intriguing. There’s a bit of hoppy bitterness at the start, but the sweetness from the malts and oranges practically neutraizes it. It’s almost as if this beer is a San Pellegrino Blood Orange Soda and Ballast Point Sculpin IPA Shandy, but without feeling watered down in any way. When you get to the finish, the orangey goodness takes over. It’s sweet and juicy, but never cloyingly so!

In case you couldn’t tell, I really enjoyed Funky Buddha’s More Moro. It’s a deliciously refreshing and juicy IPA that I will definitely buy again. If I can find it!
