DTLA: A Peek Into the Blue Room at the Los Angeles Athletic Club

Scotch Apple
The Los Angeles Athletic Club in Downtown Los Angeles revealed its new Blue Room recently. It was the clubhouse for the old Uplifters Club started by LAAC members L. Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz fame) and others. The Uplifters also known affectionately as the Cuplifters, met in this room located up the stairs behind a fake book case during Prohibition. When Prohibition was repealed, the need for secrecy went out the window and the room was forgotten.
LAAC is currently undergoing many renovations and the Blue Room is really another fun perk of membership. You still have to be invited to the resurrected Uplifters club but until then, have a drink at the bar on the third floor, the Invention room.
Lovely books column
The decor was designed by Timothy Oulton and LAAC has partnered with The Macallan for whisky. I was invited to check out the Blue Room and enjoy a couple of drinks.
I liked the Scotch Apple (shown above) with both Macallan Scotch whisky and American bourbon, Berentzen Apple liqueur and maple.
Rob Roy
I also had a classic Rob Roy with Macallan. Or you could just go for Macallan neat or on the rocks to fit into the vintage athletic vibe of the room.

It’s such a great space and I loved looking at all the books which features works of past members. It’s a comfortable spot. If only walls could talk!

We took a tour of the available athletic activities. Besides group work out classes, work out machines, basketball courts, swimming pool and plenty of tennis and squash courts, the LAAC is currently renovating three floors of the building. New locker rooms are coming along with updated cafe and coffee carts. It was actually the renovation that revealed the secret staircase to the Blue Room.

You don’t have to be a member to book a room in the hotel and so the LAAC remains very busy with all the convention goers in DTLA. You get all the benefits of membership if you stay at the hotel. I’d ask about checking out the Blue Room if you can!
