We love trying new products here at BevMo! So we were pretty excited to get Kyle, the Senior Innovation Manager from Pernod Ricard, to come to San Francisco and show us their new moonshine called H. Walker & Sons. We even got him to make a stop in San Francisco at KFOG to be on the “BevMo! Cork Dork Report!” We had a great time talking to Renee, and we even whipped up a quick and easy cocktail – which you are going to love. (The recipe is below!)
We had a few questions for Kyle……
Why moonshine?
Moonshine is one of those products that’s making a big comeback in America: just last year, sales of Moonshine more than doubled in size – seems people are really into it! (and it doesn’t hurt that the show Moonshiners is still a HUGE hit!)
What is Moonshine exactly?
Moonshine is a white spirit, not too different from Vodka. It came out of the prohibition era. During that time, it was illegal to either make or drink spirits. Some people decided to secretly make their own spirits at night, in the dark, so the authorities wouldn’t find out. They used the light of the moon so they could at least see what they were doing! And that’s how Moonshine gets its name! Today, creating Moonshine is entirely legal and gives us the opportunity to really perfect the production process to get a great tasting spirit.
What does your Moonshine taste like?
Our Moonshine is exceptionally smooth, because it’s made using spirit distilled from fine American wheat.
Before Kyle could answer the “what it tastes like question”, Renee poured herself a sample and gave us a review!! She loved the hints of nuttiness and honey sweetness. Two thumbs up from Renee!!
We’ve launched four varieties of the moonshine: the 100 proof unflavored version, then 3 flavors: Strawberry with a hint of Rhubarb, Peach and our unique Hot Cinnamon. They are all 80% proof and made using natural flavors.
We like the bottle, it’s very old school. What was the inspiration?
When we worked on the design, we tried to mix the contemporary with the traditional. The bottle is actually based on a traditional spirits jug – it even has a mini handle so it’s easy to pour. We left the glass clear and our liquid is also clear so the overall look feels modern and minimalist. Instead of a cap, we used a traditional cork with a black top. The labels on the front and back are printed on what looks like old, heavy stock paper – and tells the story of our brand, H. Walker & Sons.
How do you serve the moonshine?
Moonshine can be enjoyed many ways. Because ours is so smooth, you can drink it neat or on the rocks. Also, by adding a few simple ingredients, like lemonade and a wedge of fruit, you can make a delicious cocktail quickly and easily. Mix it in cocktails just like you would use vodka, or your favorite spirit.
