Longmorn 21 years Signatory Vintage is a very sweet whisky from a distillery that was founded in 1893 by a former manager of Glendronach and Bon Accord, John Duff. Duff also went on to found Glenlossie and Benriach… he was a very busy guy. Which might have been his downfall as the collapse of the whisky industry in 1898 financially devastated him and the distilleries were sold off.

Longmorn eventually ended up in the hands of Glenlivet Distillers Ltd, who was bought by Chivas Brothers who was in turn bought by Pernod Ricard where it resides to this day. It’s known for having a sweet fruity Speyside quality, but this particular cask takes it to another level and if you’re not a fan of super sweet things then this might not be your cup of whisky.

EYE
Caramel

NOSE
Dark sweet malt, dark overripe fruit, graham, grain and caramel syrup. It’s a dark sweet aroma that comes off a bit sticky and cloying. It’s almost overwhelmingly sweet for me.

PALATE
Starts off with a weird combo of dirty malt, caramel syrup, vanilla and stale spice. It then morphs into a slightly sulfury wood. Weird. Not horrible, just weird and edging up on being cloyingly sweet.

FINISH
This is the best part of the whisky. A nice medium fade of malt, fudge, caramel, citrus and wood.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
The dark sweet notes over take it and throw it off balance. Medium body with a slick texture that runs a bit hot even with water.

OVERALL
I don’t hate the Longmorn 21 years Signatory Vintage, but I don’t love it either. There are aspects I enjoy about its dark inky sweetness, but not being a huge fan of super sweet things It ends up feeling like a one trick pony to me after a bit. It’s the kind of whisky that I could enjoy the first few sips of but tire of by the time I empty a glass and definitely wouldn’t pour a second. But that’s me and I’m not a fan of super sweet things. But if you are, then this might be right up your alley.
