The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail. I believe it’s open to interpretation. And by that I mean syrups, bitters and spirits. We all know this cocktail is a classic. There are now old fashioned “mixers” if you will on the cocktail scene; like Drink White Whale (From North Carolina) and Bittermilk . What I like about the Old Fashioned cocktail is that you really get a clear taste of the flavor profiles of said spirit. It’s easy to create flavored and infused syrups for your cocktails and test different bitters, or, stick with the sugar cube and a few dashes of angostura. So, this old fashioned is exactly what it says. Rum and raisin work well together. You know, ice cream…bread pudding…cocktails. Instead of using a sugar cube for our sweetener, we’re using a raisin simple syrup.
For Raisin Syrup:
1/2 Cup Raisins
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Water
*Bring contents to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, light smashing the raisins to release the flavor. Let cool for about 30 minutes. Strain and bottle.
