Scotland’s The Macallan distillery, which a few months backed debuted its Rare Cask whisky to US markets as an extension of its upper end 1824 Masters Series, also is in the process of adding two other bottlings to this line up. These are Reflexion and No. 6, both of which look destined for more global distribution.

The 1824 Masters Series, which also includes the very expensive M Scotch, aims to, according to the distillery, “take whisky lovers on a journey through increasingly dark and complex single malts.” The series begins in this regard with Rare Cask, increasing in intensity up through M.

Here’s what The Macallan has to say specifically about these two new whiskies:

Reflexion is a masterpiece in style, featuring angular facets that reflect the light to showcase the deep mahogany of the whisky within.  Its unique colour and flavour is drawn from maturation in carefully selected hogshead casks which allow for a greater surface area of wood to interact with the spirit. Bold and full bodied, the initial citrus zest with new oak quickly gives way to a juicier sweetness of lemon and orange.

No.6  brings together two Masters, our whisky maker and masters of crystal, Lalique, to create a piece of timeless elegance.  The angular decanter with six facets holds a complex single malt using only first fill Spanish sherry seasoned oak casks. Heavy and sumptuous, No. 6 tastes like a rich fruit cake with raisin, dates and figs before offering silky smooth oaky notes and boasts a rich dark walnut colour.

Price wise, according to the Robb Report, expect to pay around $1,200 for Reflexion and $4,000 for No. 6. Neither have age statements, like Rare Cask, but given the popularity of this brand it won’t likely stop bottles being snapped up by drinkers and collectors alike. Tasting notes for each from the distillery are below.

REFLEXION

Nose: Orange and citrus fruits open up like fresh fruit on a sunny market day. Their zest is fresh, the fruit is firm. A slight waxy note fades to fresh green apples. Then the sweet stall: chocolate, thick fudge, boiled sweets, aniseed; caramel toffees almost overwhelm whilst white chocolate truffles are hidden. Just as you are ready to taste, a delivery of bananas in fresh, sweet oak arrives.

Palate: Initial light citrus zest with new oak quickly gives way to a juicier sweetness, thick and succulent, of lemon and orange. Raisin, sultana and apple, with a hint of cinnamon and ginger, are subtle.

Finish: Boiled sweets add balance to a glimpse of toasted oak to give a medium and soft finish.

NO. 6

Nose:  Spanish oak casks deliver wonderful rich notes, elegant and polished. Raisin, dates and figs dominate like a mountain of fruit; sultana and toffee apples add texture and depth. The weight of flavour practically squeezes the juice from the raisins, dark and rich with great viscosity. ginger and cinnamon gently dance around the edges – the ginger slightly dry, the cinnamon soft. dark chocolate is majestic, whilst vanilla sweetness lingers in the background.

Palate: Heavy and sumptuous. Like a rich fruit cake with raisin, dates and figs, apples, sultanas, orange; then ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and hints of clove. Oak notes are like velvet, soft and chic.

Finish: Silky smooth, this is a cake to savour with a long and full finish.
