Since the Second World War, the location of the bar has harboured many murky taverns and pubs, and now the new owner has transformed it into an elegant modern speakeasy cocktail bar with the name Curfew, that conjures memories when curfews were executed in the American prohibition time of the 1920s-30s.
The owner and the man behind the bar is the Portuguese mixologist Humberto Marques, who has shaken, stirred and served cocktails for many years around the world in high profile places, such as Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland, at celebrity chef Tony Singh’s restaurant and cocktail bar Oloroso in Edinburgh and latest at the popular 1105 cocktail bar in Copenhagen. He is known for his creative mind and technical skills, and is published in Gary Regan’s 101 Best New Cocktails, a contributor for Liquor.com and he’s been a brand ambassador for anCnoc Whiskey and Global Brands.
The atmosphere in the spacious bar is relaxed, and the music ads just the right touch of scratchy funky jazzy vinyl record sound. The interior is elegant yet simple, with unique details of handcrafted blue tiles from Portugal, vintage American designer Arthur Umanoff iron barstools, and solid wooden tables to place your delicious cocktail on. The glass cabinets in the bar testify to a serious collector of vintage silver and crystal bar gear, rare cocktail books and original spirits bottles.
Curfews bartenders are dressed in leather suspender uniforms, loaded with vintage bar tools, and equipped with manual cocktail machines that can stir a delicious classical Negroni cocktail.
The menu contains Humberto’s own artistry and seasonal cocktail recipes that really stands out on both taste and visually. He uses homemade shrubs and syrups as well as undiscovered herbs and spices. If you fancy a classic cocktail, the menu features unforgettable classics as well as forgotten classics that has been dug out of the vintage cocktail books.
Curfew accommodates 110 people, and the opening hours are Tues-Thur18-02, Friday 16-04, Saturday 18-04.
