Corpse Reviver (No. 2) Cocktail
Corpse Reviver cocktails are generally referred to as “hair of the dog” hangover cures, and are thought to reduce the symptoms resulting from the overindulgence of alcohol. The term “hair of the dog” comes from the 16th century medical treatment for rabies, which called for the application of a “hair of the dog that bit you” directly to the wound. It became clear over time that this rabies treatment was ineffective, but the term was fast embraced by the drinking public.
The Savoy Cocktail Handbook describes two Corpse Reviver Cocktails, with the Corpse Reviver (No. 2) being our favorite. The ample amount of lemon juice makes this an especially nice way to perk oneself up at any time of day, hangover or not, however be sure to heed the warning listed directly under the recipe which states:
“Four of these taken in swift succession will unrevive the corpse again.” ~ Harry Craddock, The Savoy Cocktail Handbook (1930)
