What happens when a government intelligence employee gets drunk? A punchline that, for some odd reason, his employers don’t find terribly funny.
Early Monday morning, an off-duty employee for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency decided to fly his friend’s 2x2-foot drone after having a few too many. An unfortunate gust of wind or a tree caused him to lose control of the drone, which then landed on the White House grounds.
The next day, after learning where the drone had landed, the employee reported his misadventure to his employer, making the investigation into the incident much easier to solve. It’s illegal to operate drones in Washington, D.C., but the employee—who is still unnamed—has yet to be charged with a crime.
The good news? The failure of the White House’s radar to pick up the drone entering the grounds sparked re-evaluations of how safe the President really is if a drunken employee can accidentally maneuver a drone into those hallowed grounds.
