This recipe is a take on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail. It's a totally beautiful drink that is boozy, a little bit floral and a little bit sweet.

Hibiscus Blackberry Old Fashioned

  • 3 blackberries
  • 1/2 oz hibiscus simple syrup*
  • 2 oz Bulleit rye
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Garnish: Orange peel, 2 blackberries
Glass: Rocks

Muddle the blackberries and hibiscus simple syrup in a shaker.

Add the rye, bitters and a handful of ice, and stir for 20 to 30 seconds.

Strain into a rocks glass over a big ice cube.

Garnish with an orange peel and 2 blackberries.

*Hibiscus simple syrup: Combine 1/2 cup demerara sugar, 1/2 cup filtered water and 1/4 cup dried hibiscus flowers in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Allow syrup to sit at room temperature for 1 hour, then strain out the flowers and refrigerate the syrup. Keeps for up to 2 weeks.
