You’ve probably experienced—or at least heard of—the common phenomenon where people appear more attractive after you’ve had a few drinks (aka beer goggles). Well, a new study from the journal of Alcohol and Alcoholism looked at the phenomenon from a new perspective—which you may be able to use to your advantage. It asked: How attractive do YOU appear to others while you’re drinking?

Scientists took headshots of people while they were sober, after one drink and after multiple drinks. Participants were shown pairs of the headshots—a person sober next to the same person after one drink, someone after a single drink and after multiple drinks—and asked to choose which picture was more attractive.

The conclusion: One drink is the magic number. The study found that having one drink makes your face appear more attractive than either being sober or having had a few drinks. Everything in moderation, right?
