A few weeks ago, The 86 Co. co-founder Simon Ford climbed 19,341 feet to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity.
So far, he’s pulled together about $5,500 to help Un86’d, a charity that donates money to hospitality professionals in need and prevents them from being 86’d (restaurant lingo for done, finished or temporarily off the menu) when they fall on hard times. The money also comes, in part, from a series of cocktail events hosted by Ford and The 86 Co. in which $8.60 was donated for every Ramos Gin Fizz made with Fords Gin.
“I’ve been a part the hospitality industry for many many years and want to do what I can to give back,” Ford said. “I love my community and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Climbing and reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro was by far one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, but I wouldn’t have done it for anyone else or any other cause."
Ford started The 86 Co. in 2012, along with master mixologists Jason Kosmas and Dushan Zaric, with the purpose of creating a line of spirits that catered specifically to bartenders. The company’s line of spirits, including Fords Gin, Cana Brava Rum, Aylesbury Duck Vodka and Tequila Cabeza, has been quite successful and is available for purchase across the country.
