Bex's St. Patty Cocktails.
Aaaaaalll right.
Let’s get down to business.
Who here is celebrating some kind of drinking festivity on this mighty fine St. Patricks’s Day?
Ah, good. I knew we were friends for a reason.
And yes, I have decided your future for you, because my vision through the computer screen isn’t at my finest. And if you were not planning on partaking in anything wild, well, I mean…fine. Ugh, okay, I have something for you too.
Mainly from observation, I feel like this holiday is one of transformations. Everyone’s just a little bit Irish today it seems. And what began as a religious day for the patron saint of Ireland, has now become this international celebration of all that is Irish culture. A lot springs into action. Dancing, parades, special foods, a shit ton of green—and many people’s favorite activity: drinking. Well heeeey there friend. That’s where I step in. Let me help you. Or use this as an excuse to make some cocktails.
Depending on your drinking mood for this grand day, I have not one--but two cocktails for you!
One for the marathon drinker.
And one for the laid-back sipper.
1. Bex's Irish Maid
Some of you may be familiar with an Irish Maid cocktail, some of you may not be. Well. It's one that has been considered a classic, and is delightfully winning in lightness for an Irish whiskey cocktail. This one is definitely one on the sourer side, but yet very refreshing. It sweetens up over time, one could say (or maybe just you do). For those who want more of that summerly splash of coolness, and one that you can have all night without it feeling too heavy (weight wise, that is. Don't worry, you'll feel it for sure after a couple.) Here, your future awaits. A taste of cucumber, elderflower, and Irish whiskey? You can't go wrong with. What makes this Bex's twist however, is my addition of a sparkle of mint and the switch of lemon to lime. (Gotta stay green, people!)
Let's concoct:
- 2 oz Bushmills Black Bush (Or Jameson Black Barrel Irish Whiskey)
- 0.5 oz St. Germain
- 0.5 Lime
- 0.5 Simple
- 2 Slices of Cucumber
- 3 Mint Leaves
*Muddle Cucumber in mixing glass. Add in mint and press (do not muddle). Add remaining ingredients. Shake with ice and strain into a Collin's glass or rocks glass with ice cubes. Garnish with mint sprig and cucumber slice.
2. No Luck Needed
Oh you got this. You don't need no body. You just wanna sit back, and chill, and let the people who want to run around with the world, just do their damn thing. This one is celebrating the holiday, on the inside. Not visually the greenest drink out there, but the heart of is has some great Irish color. "No Luck Needed" is a strong devil that I would not recommend you downing in a gulp or two. With a rinse of Absinthe and kicks of Green Chartreuse--you might see that pot of gold swinging towards you in full force. For those who are fans of cocktails in the realm of an Old Fashion or a Sazerac, this may be up your alley.
Let's concoct:
- 2 oz Bushmills Black Bush (Or Jameson Black Barrel Irish Whiskey)
- 1 oz Green Chartreuse
- 0.25 Domaine De Canton
- 2 Dashes of Peychaud's Bitters
- 2 Dashes of Absinthe
*Rinse couple glass with the dashes of Absinthe and set glass aside. Add remaining ingredients into mixing glass, add ice and stir. Strain into couple glass. Garnish with orange peel.
