Didn’t catch most (or any) of this year’s Best Picture nominees? Or maybe you’ve seen them all and already have well thought-out rationale for your picks for statues. Either way, it’s still fun to watch (and maybe snark on a little) Hollywood’s Biggest Night. These libations are inspired by their names and ingredients of a few of the eight films that are up for the evening’s biggest award. They’re great for that viewing party, where maybe we’ll finally be able to toast Leo’s Oscar win.
Brooklyn
Lacey’s DreamRecipe courtesy of head bartender Jennifer Knott, 312 Chicago, Chicago, IL
This period drama takes place in 1952 Brooklyn, where Ellis Lacey emigrates from Ireland to New York, falls in love, deals with her past and ultimate must decide between Ireland and the United States. This drink combines a classic Irish whiskey with an American brandy
2 oz. Jameson Irish Whiskey
¾ oz. St. George Spirits Raspberry Brandy
¾ oz. Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao
4 dashes peach bitters
Three raspberries on a cocktail pick for garnish
Add the first three ingredients to a mixing glass, add ice and stir until chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with the raspberries.

The Botanist

The name of this cocktail gives a nod to all that gardening that Matt Damon’s character was able to do on Mars, as Mark Watney’s botany background allowed him to plant and harvest potatoes–at least until one of those pesky storms destroyed his greenhouse. The drink uses a gin with a same name, a modern styled spirit from Scotland.
2 oz. The Botanist Islay Dry Gin
1 oz. Navarre Pineau des Charentes Rose
2 dashes orange bitters
Dehydrated blood orange slice, for garnish
Combine the first three ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice, stir until chilled, strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with the orange slice.
The Big Short
Modern Banking
Recipe courtesy of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Chicago, IL
This financial flick tackles the financial crisis of 2007 to 2008, which was triggered by the buildup of the housing market and the credit bubble. Green Chartreuse gives the tipple a hue that’s meant to signify–what else–money.
2 oz. Cognac (they use Hennessy, but you can substitute Gautier VS Cognac)
2 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. Green Chartreuse
1 oz. lemon juice
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake until chilled. Strain it into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

In this frontier film set in 1823, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Hugh Glass, a fur trapper, must endure the wilderness alone after a bear attack (including eating raw bison liver.) This drink’s got cooked bacon instead, which goes down much easier–especially when it’s mixed with maple and Bourbon.
2 oz. Larceny Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
1 ½ tsp. maple syrup
1 dash Angostura Bitters
1 slice cooked bacon, for garnish
Add the first three ingredients to a mixing glass, add ice and stir until chilled. Strain it into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with the bacon.
Bridge of Spies
10 Year Sentence
Recipe courtesy of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Chicago, IL
In Bridge of Spies, lawyer James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks) negotiates the release of pilot Frances Gary Powers, whose U-2 was shot down over the Soviet Union, through the release of a Soviet KGB operative imprisoned in the United States. The name of this Bourbon and Sherry drink refers to the prison sentence Powers faces if he’s not released.
2 oz. Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
1 oz. dry Sherry
½ oz. Cointreau
½ oz. lemon juice
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Splash of soda
Lemon peel, for garnish
Add the first five ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake until chilled. Strain it into a rocks glass over fresh ice, and garnish with a lemon peel.
