In mid-1920s Copenhagen, portrait artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) asks her husband, popular landscape artist Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), to stand in for a female model who was late to come to their flat to pose for a painting she's working on. The act of Einar posing as a female figure unmasks his lifelong identification as a woman, whom he has named Lili Elbe. This sets off a progression, first tentative and then irreversible, of Lili leaving behind her masculine identity, which she has struggled to maintain all her life. We'll leave the rest for you to see at your nearest cinema....

Since the movie was just released at cinemas in Copenhagen in February, Visitcopenhagen suggested we create a cocktail in honour of this film.

I got inspired by noticing that, in the movie, I could see apples and a vintage water siphon on a living room table. So apples were the first ingredient to play along with gin. I didn't want to create a fizzy drink although this drink may slightly resemble a classic cocktail, the Ramos gin fizz. The bergamot juice tastes less sour than lemon, but more bitter than grapefruit. It's this bitterness that interacts very well with the rest of the ingredients creating a very interesting marriage of flavours.

The Danish Girl

1 teaspoon coriander seeds
5cl Beefeater gin
3cl (1oz) apple marmalade
3cl (1oz) bergamot citrus juice
2cl (2/3oz) fresh cream
1.5cl (1/2oz) Lillet blanc
1cl (1/3 oz) sloe gin
1 teaspoon rose flower water

Crush the coriander seeds in the shaker using a muddler or a pestle. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake strongly over ice. Double strain into a vintage cocktail glass. Garnish with a rose petal
