Being a bartender is definitely not an easy job! Though, since you have chosen this career -either because you love it or just to make ends meet- you have to follow these ten simple things that will help you improve your work and make you a better bartender.
#1. Always put a smile on your face
We all have our concerns, but it is our job to be in a good mood.
Working too much? Take a day off, it's going to be better longterms.
#2. Be polite to the customers
I know there are plenty of weird -not to say anything worse- customers every night, but you have to live with that. Most of these people think they are more special than the rest. Keep your anger, suprise them and make them feel special and you may be rewarded in the end. After all everyone is special in their own way.
#3. Don't drink. Don't use your phone
By saying "don't drink", I don't mean anything at all. If someone buys you a shot it's rude not drink it, but definitely don't get tipsy.
Also, your phone should
be used only as an emergency tool, in case you have forgotten how to
make a particular drink -which you shouldn't, but we're human beings
after all.
#4. Stop Chatting excessively/Flirting with your co-workers
I'm not saying becoming anti-social, but cut down that chit chat all the time. A bar is a business and your role is to prepare drinks and bring money. Besides, you can hang out after shift ends, with everyone you like.
Moreover, flirting with other co-workers is a NO! We all have seen this hot new waitress, but keep your personal out of your work!
#5. Know your bar/liquors
Starting the shift with no knowledge of your work space is a waste of time and time is money! In addition, it's a shame to start working without knowing the basics! If you don't know what vodka looks like or how to make an old fashioned, you'd better start reading!
#6. Follow the hygiene rules
Touching ice with bare hands, touching the rim of the glass etc. is prohibited. Would you like such a drink for yourself after all?
#7. Improve your style
Everyone has his own techniques, in matter of pooring, shaking, straining etc. Watch videos online, read stuff and adapt them to your personal style. Your manager will be happier and your tips will rise for sure!
#8. Get creative
Have you seen a new cocktail and you want to recreate it? Did you have a brainstorm? DO IT! Nobody is born a mixologist. Experimenting is one of the things I love in this job! Just do it with limit. The manager is right in the corner.
#9. Make a buzz around you
A good bartender is keeping the crowd entertained. Buy fancy tools, improve your jokes and be social. We're not clowns but if you manage to be the center of attention, you can certainly earn more or even get a better job in a fancy bar.
#10. When the shift ends, go back to normal
I know this is the hardest, but more important rule to follow. You have to seperate your work from your private life. After all many of us have our family awaiting back home.
