Today's cocktails: Godfather / Godmother

Today's ingredients: scotch or vodka, Disaronno

It's confession time. Are you ready? Okay, here goes... I have never seen any of the Godfather movies. I have seen Scarface, The Untouchables, part of Boardwalk Empire, and maybe two episodes of The Sopranos. I'm usually a sucker for books over movies, but I've never read any gangster genre novels. The content just doesn't appeal to me, though I do love some Art Deco design and settings from the era (see: Bioshock). I'm just not into crime drama in general. Sue me. Give me sci-fi steampunk Westerns any day (RIP Firefly).

I never had official godparents growing up, though a family two houses up from ours was a de facto version since I spent as much time there as I did my own house. It also never occurred to me that I would one day be a godfather, yet here I am, by way of being an uncle-by-marriage. You know what's involved in regular godparent duties: hang out, be around, take part, and should the unthinkable happen, step in as actual parent to the orphaned. It's not a pleasant subject for thought, but much like a will, it's practical, and if there's one thing this household embraces, it's practicality. Just gotta get those wills signed at some point. Only been sitting there for, what, a year now? Oops :)

Oh yeah, before we get to the goods, I must report that I remained successfully unemployed for exactly thirteen days. I was offered and took a sound engineer gig with a local community theater and an on-air radio news gig that I can do from my home studio, so it looks like I'll be back to, ya know, making money soon. At least it's not in an office.

Godfather / Godmother

Getting back to the core of this blog's title and meaning, we're trotting out two two-ingredient staples endorsed by the IBA:

Godfather

  • 3.5cl / 1.18oz scotch
  • 3.5cl / 1.18oz Disaronno
  • Pour all ingredients into an Old Fashioned glass filled with ice cubes.
  • Stir gently.

Godmother

  • 3.5cl / 1.18oz vodka
  • 3.5cl / 1.18oz Disaronno
  • Pour all ingredients into an Old Fashioned glass filled with ice cubes.
  • Stir gently.

Or, ya know, just go with equal parts of each liquor and call it a day. You're not about to measure out one-sixth of an ounce. If you still have some of that Glenlivet 12 lying around, feel free to use it here, but be forewarned that it will get lost in the Disaronno. At that point, you may as well just use vodka and be done with it. To really get something noticeable, you'll want to go with a beefier scotch like a Laphroaig or Ardbeg, but it's your call. It also depends on your audience. I've become a big fan of Cask Islay as a peaty mixing scotch, but it's really good on its own, too.
