Ah the best month of the year is upon us. Halloween draws near and everyone here on the dark isles are dusting off our best ghoulfriends to have a month long party. Every good luau needs some performance art though, and of course Halloween needs the danger of the Fire Knife dance. Though war dances are very traditional on Samoan islands Fire Knife dancing didn’t exist reportedly until the mid forties. According to the story a performer saw a Hindu fire breather and used some of his oil on rags wrapped around his Machetes. If you’ve never seen a Fire Knife dance then it’s really something you need to check out.

Of course no luau of the damned is complete without a tall glass of rum boogie. The refreshing spicy flavor of our Fire Knife punch is sure to keep you alive and sparking. We combine amber and gold rums with orange bitter, citrus and spice before setting it on fire. We recommend not practicing knife twirling after a few of these, unless of course your looking to lose some weight the hard way.

Fire Knife Punch

Ingredients

1 oz Brugal Anejo

1 oz Flor De Cana Gold

½ oz Aperol

½ oz Campari

½ oz white grapefruit juice

½ oz cinnamon syrup

¾ oz fresh lime juice

¼ oz St Elizabeth Allspice Dram

Shake with ice and pour into a chimney glass. Garnish with a flaming lime shell or a wedge of ruby red grapefruit. Serve with a straw.

The aroma of the concotion is brown sugar, bitter orange and burnt spice. The drink has notes of molasses, sweet vanilla, bitter orange and rich Caribbean spice. Bitter orange, earthy sugar cane, and grapefruit begin in the mouth unfolding into allspice, cinnamon and island spice. This drink is tart and refreshing with just enough sweetness. If you find it to bitter we recommend using orange juice in place of grapefruit, but we enjoy this just as it is. My favorite part of this drink is that slightly bitter spice laden finish. The drink is better through a straw for some reason. I’m sure someone can drop some science on me as to why.

So keep your limbs and lights close guys and ghouls, the Dark Isles is just getting going and we’ve got a lot more for you to enjoy this month. If your not confident in your flaming skills don’t be afraid to use the grapefruit wedge. It still looks pretty. The flaming lime shell looks much prettier in person but photographs rather poorly for yours truly. Until next time…
