Basil Hayden's 10-year-old, released last month, is, shall we say, comfortably consistent, albeit with a bit more spice.

This bourbon is always smooth — as I’ve said many times — almost to a fault. The inherent smoothness is even prevalent in typically spicier offerings, including Basil Hayden's Rye Whiskey from 2017 and Basil Hayden's Two by Two Rye last year.

The most recent release will return in limited quantities for bourbon fans each holiday season, Beam Suntory says in a news release.

Basil Hayden's 10, the release says, features the brand's trademark high-rye bourbon recipe, aged longer in American Oak barrels to offer an additional layer of complexity to an already distinctive whiskey.

“The extra aging delivers heightened oak aromas along with hints of char and vanilla while maintaining Basil Hayden's trademark spice in every sip. This intensification of flavor makes Basil Hayden's 10-Year-Old bourbon a memorable bourbon for fans and newcomers alike while remaining approachable at 80 proof.”

The new release brings some spicy notes on the palate, as well as with the first sip. Oak and toffee are present, as well as vanilla and a hint of cinnamon.

The mild yet flavorful 80-proof whiskey runs about $60 a bottle.
