Basil Hayden’s bourbon, the smooth-sipping cousin to barrel-strength behemoth Booker’s, has lately taken a big interest in rye. The Dark Rye and Two by Two Rye — a bourbon blend — are two of the most recent offerings from Beam Suntory.

But now for something completely different.

Basil Hayden’s Caribbean Reserve Rye, its latest offering, contrasts rye and rum, a blend of two rye whiskies and is finished with black strap rum.

“Crafted as an approachable whiskey expression,” a news release says, “Caribbean Reserve Rye features a blend of 8-year-old Kentucky straight rye whiskey and four-year-old Canadian rye, which brings layers of distinct spice, toasted oak and vanilla notes. The blend is then finished with the addition of black strap rum, which adds sweet notes of brown sugar and molasses to the final taste profile.”

The Caribbean Rye clocks in at 80 proof.

“With the release of Caribbean Reserve Rye, we wanted to give our fans a fun whiskey expression that you can bring out and share during warmer weather occasions, whether that’s mixing it up at an outdoor barbecue or gifting it for a housewarming celebration,” Rob Mason, a vice president for marketing at Beam Suntory, says in the release.

“As a brand that has always broken traditional whiskey expectations, we’re excited to help our fans discover new, interesting ways to enjoy the rye category, and Caribbean Reserve Rye does just that.”

Golden honey in color, the new rye has a nose of caramel, vanilla and brown sugar, as well as soft rye notes and a hint of oak on the palate.

Basil Hayden’s Caribbean Reserve Rye is available — it runs about $45 — for a limited time nationwide.
