The Laphroaig 15 year old Scotch whisky is something of a cherished item among fans of this distillery. It was a staple of Laphroaig’s offerings for many years, said to even be the current Prince of Wales’ favorite whisky. Retired in 2009 and replaced by the more expensive 18 year old, it ended up becoming a collector’s item as supplies dwindled. It is now back though, at least for a limited time.
The re-released Laphroiag 15 Year Old, according to the distillery, was pushed back out into retail channels in part to help celebrate the whisky operation’s 200th anniversary. It also pays homage to the original version released back in the 1980s.
Bottled at 43% ABV, the revived 15 year old expression is pricing around £75 ($115 USD). It is the first in a number of specially released commemorative editions planned by Laphroiag, and as for tasting notes, you can find some official ones below courtesy of the distillery.
Nose: Initial scents of grapefruit and fresh mint. A touch of water releases salted caramel, with signature Islay peat smoke underlying sweet orchard fruit aromas.
Body: Pink peppercorns, light peat smoke with a soft dryness, before a finish of tobacco and faint sea salt.
Finish: Mellow with a smoky aftertaste.
