Like all of the Blood Oath whiskeys, this Blood Oath Pact 5 is a blend of different bourbons. What sets this edition apart, most notably, is the use of Caribbean rum barrels to finish one of the bourbons in the blend. Like all of the Blood Oath whiskeys, it’s bottled at the temperature of the human body (98.6 proof).

Blood Oath Pact 5

There isn’t much else about it available other than what’s listed in the quote below, but due to Luxco’s relationship with Heaven Hill it’s a fairly safe bet that some, if not all, of the whiskeys in this blend come from them. Time to see what’s what and dig into this whiskey review.

Blood Oath Pact 5 Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Luxco’s Words:

A masterful union of three well-bred bourbons. One, a 13-year mahogany bourbon, un‑apologetically peppery with shavings of dark chocolate. Two, an 11-year silky, wheated bourbon rich with vanilla and honey. And three, an 8-year find, finished in Caribbean rum barrels to impart orange, brown sugar and warm island spice. Every sip, an uncharted, sensory adventure.

Tasting Notes

EYE
Caramel

NOSE
Dark fruit, brown sugar, baking spices, roasted nuts, toffee and a light earthiness.

PALATE
Oak, dark fruit, brown sugar, graham, cocoa, spice a bit of citrus peel and nuts.

FINISH
Medium -> Spice, oak, dark fruit and brown sugar that fades to a rum sweetness.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Not fully balanced, round full body and a lightly oily feel.

A tasty bourbon and I enjoyed every minute of it, but it’s lacking the depth of some of the previous releases.

Blood Oath Pact 5 Review: Overall and Score

All around it’s a darkly sweet bourbon profile. The Aroma is nice, but I’m not getting any real rum notes; Palate also comes through like a fairly standard bourbon with a bit more spice and sweetness – again no definitive rum notes, just light hints; Finish is where the rum picks up and becomes more noticeable. It tastes like a good bourbon, but wouldn’t guess rum casks were used.

On the whole it comes across fairly light, but the Blood Oath Pact 5 is still something I’d enjoy sipping on now and then. First poured I wasn’t getting much out of the nose, but as it opened it a pleasant aroma arrived and became my favorite part of the whiskey. Blood Oath Pact 2 is still my favorite they’ve done, with Pact 3 close behind. Pact 5 is far from terrible though and I’d put it on par with Pact 1 and 4.

SCORE: 86/100 (B)
