I have a confession to make... I'm addicted to milkshakes. I order them when I'm out, I make them at home, I mix in all sorts of sweets to make them thick and crunchy. It's a bad habit I know, but do you remember when you were a kid how happy you got when your parents bought or made you a milkshake? It was the highlight of your week! We’d be lying if we said we don’t get a little jealous now as parents watching the joy on our kids faces and thats why we asked ourselves why do they get to have all the fun?!? We’re all grown up now, so why can’t our milkshakes grow up too?!? We’re talking adult milkshakes!

Adult milkshakes are exactly what they sound like, frozen milkshakes with alcohol added. One of our first experiences with adult milkshakes was our first trip to Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans. In Nola they pretty much spike EVERYTHING, so we had one in the middle of the day (day drinking!) and have been hooked ever since. You’ll find them on the menu at a few restaurants in some cities, but if you don’t want to leave your house or you’re “frugal” (see: cheapo) like me, you can make them at home!

They’re super easy to make, all you need is a blender and a few ingredients. You can go as simple as vanilla ice cream with some booze, or go crazy with exotic flavors, toppings, and syrups; I call it the works. One thing to keep in mind is you don’t have to go all out with liquor. If it’s too strong you might get turned off, we prefer to use liqueurs instead of liquor, they’ll give it some buzz, some flavoring, and blend right into the sweet creaminess of the ice cream. Generally we go for 2:1 ratio of ice cream to booze (2 scoops, 1 oz) but you can play around with it yourself, don’t be afraid to let the creativity flow!

It's just starting to warm back up down here in Florida, so we'll be whipping these up this weekend, but if you're up North and still blanketed in the cold or snow, feel free to save this recipe for the Spring or Summer when you need help cooling down. Check out our recipe below and let us know what you think!
