For most, Springtime means getting outside, enjoying a Shandy and relaxing with friends in the mild temperatures.  However, for me, I always get a cold right when the weather starts to get nice.  Yes, it seems like the Universe is conspiring against me and wants me to stay locked indoors getting paler and paler.  But this year, I think I headed off the cold with a little at home remedy, which I'm calling the No Fuss Bourbon Hot Toddy (it was that or the "My throat hurts, I'm not waiting to infuse ginger" Hot Toddy - your pick).  It's quite delicious and after one last night (and a restful sleep) I'm as good as new!

I'll admit that last night I just did mix everything by taste, because my throat hurt and then my ear started to hurt and I didn't have time for measurements.  But after I came to this morning with a clear head I decided to make it again for you, my dear readers, and this time with a little more specific measurements.  If you know me, you'll know I'm a heavy pour so feel free to ease up on any ingredient you think might be a little too much for your taste buds.

No Fuss Bourbon Hot Toddy
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 1/2-2 oz bourbon (Eagle Rare 10 year is a favorite in my apartment!)
3 - 1 inch cubes of fresh ginger cut into large slices
1 tablespoon honey

Place the ginger slices into your mug. Add boiling water to mug.  Let steep for a minute or two.  This will allow for the water to cool a bit and for the water to get a good ginger flavor.  (Technically, you should really boil the water for about 20 min with the ginger in it, but as I said, my throat hurt and this is a no fuss, impatient recipe).  Add the bourbon to the mug, up to 2 oz depending on taste.  Stir in the honey and enjoy.  You are welcome to remove the ginger slices, but I keep them in because they smell great.

So there you have it - a little bourbon to cure your Springtime cold. I didn't have lemons, but of course, lemon juice would probably make a nice addition.  You can also use lemon flavored tea as a base - just add a tea bag to the boiling water in the mug.

If you have your own at home remedies for sore throats, colds or coughs please let me know. I'm always happy to try out a new cure for the pesky Springtime cold.
