Cara Cara Gin & Tonic: Citrus-y Sweet

Winter isn’t all about snow and cold temperatures. It’s also about citrus - bright, delicious citrus. Two years ago I discovered the amazing-ness of Cara Cara oranges. If you have never had a Cara Cara orange, you will be surprised the first time you cut them open. They have the most delicious red colored flesh.
It reminds me of a ruby red grapefruit but the taste is totally different. It’s sweet, juicy and perfect for eating out of the hand. However, this year I decided that it needed to go into a cocktail. I know, you’re shocked.
Now when I thought of what type of cocktail I should throw together, I immediately thought of gin. Gin is my go-to spirit and I will happily drink it at any party, wedding or bar.
I usually mix it with tonic and a squeeze of lime, or some fresh herbs (like in my Basil Gin Smash) but now that I know it pairs so lovely with orange my mind is slowly changing. The fresh orang juice brings out the sweet floral notes in the gin (which I’m a huge fan of) and the tonic gives it just a little added sweetness.
If you’re new to drinking tonic make sure you pick you go with quality tonic. I personally love Q Tonic, but whatever your favorite is will work here.
Plus, if you’re anything like me you will view the added orange juice as a good reason to drink this cocktail before noon. I’m pretty sure my bloody Mary drinking grandfather agrees.
