Eggnog

Growing up, Christmas was not Christmas without eggnog. I grew up loving this iconic Christmas drink long before I discovered the alcoholic version. Every year my mother would stock up on our favorite egg nog brand, knowing that my sister and I would drink every last drop. There's nothing like sitting down to a glass full with a side of sugar cookies.

Our favorite eggnog came in a can. It was thick and creamy with just the right amount of spice. Then one year we opened a can to find that the company had changed the recipe. It was thin, milky, with not much flavor. Where was that delicious custard flavor that I had grown up with?

I've spent most of my adult life trying to find a store bought eggnog that would live up to my childhood memories. I have yet to find one. So, being Cocktail Crafty, I decided it was time to make my own.

I've tried several recipes before crafting the one listed below. I love this recipe because of the sweet custard flavor. It's yummy enough to be enjoyed with or without the booze.

Many of the eggnog recipes I came across online and in cocktail books call for the addition of whipped egg whites either folded into the batter or resting on top. I tried both methods and to say I didn't like them would be a drastic understatement. Hubby described it as drinking a glass full of meringue. I personally didn't see any added value in incorporating the egg whites. Take my advice and save them for an omelet.
