new-booze-navazos-palazzi-single-cask-montilla-old-brandyEquipo Navazos and Nicolas Palazzi have made it their mission to bring some of the more unique single cask brandies to a larger audience.  When I say single cask, it means there was only one in the world, and once it has been bottled, there is no more.

The cask the held Navazos Palazzi Single Oloroso Cask – Montilla old Brandy, contained brandy that was at least 50 years old.  That is astounding.  It was originally distilled at the Bodegas Carbonell in Aguilar de la Frontera in a pot-still.  Using Ayren grapes and stored in an ex-Oloroso sherry 632 liter cask, it was finally bottled in August of 2013 yielding only 720 375ml bottles.  No water was added.  The 80.2% proof is how it came out of the barrel.  Truly one of a kind.

Navazos Palazzi Single Cask – Montilla Old Brandy (80.2 proof)
Visual: Cola brown.
Nose: History and patience in liquid form.  Raisins, dates, molasses, old oak beams, barn hay, hemp twine, gingerbread and much more.  All this, and yet not overwhelming.
Taste: The sherry makes an audacious entrance and then graciously steps aside while the venerable grape brandy welcomes you inside.  Masculine and feminine at the same time, this is a hybrid of two worlds that have the ability to work in tandem on your palate.
Finish: Medium long with dark cherry and roasted coffee bean elements linger.
Overall: Unique and memorable.  This is sipping on a snapshot of a time long gone and one that will never come again.
GSN Rating: A-
