Named after the windswept Orcadian isle off Scotland’s North East Coast, where Pulteney Distillery is located, Stroma originates from the Norse word meaning ‘island in the stream’. It also refers to the dangerous currents on the island’s shores, including the infamous ‘Swelkie’ whirlpool.

Old Pulteney is one of the world’s finest and most distinctive single malt Scotch whiskies. Known as ‘The Maritime Malt’, it is crafted in the windswept coastal town of Wick. The distillery was established in 1826 in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, the town created to house fishermen during Wick’s famous herring boom, which drew a fleet of over 1000 boats and 7000 workers to this remote and rugged harbor.

Stroma is a blend of malt whiskies from Old Pulteney’s portfolio. Every aspect of Old Pulteney’s latest release is designed to embody the intrigue, craft and history of the brand’s seafaring roots. Stroma’s unique bottle features an embossed image of crashing waves and it is packaged in striking black and gold – with a foil neck tag, which includes the brand’s story and tasting notes.

Old Pulteney Original Stroma Liqueur (70 proof)
Visual: Deep yellow-gold.
Nose: Dark wildflower honey, rye bread, lightly toasted woodsmoke, dried barley.
Taste: Quite sweet and viscous with a strong and present Scotch flavor. Whatever spices they’re using works to offset the high sugar content.
Finish: Medium long with heathery sweetness.
Overall: Akin to other Scotch liqueurs, this one has a more robust character than most. I recommend using this in a Rusty Nail or add a splash to a Rob Roy. If you’re really adventurous try adding a quarter ounce to a Mezcal based cocktail.
