Have you heard of Hyssop before? I certainly hadn’t until recently. Hyssop is a herbaceous plant that has medicinal properties tied to helping with cough relief and as an antiseptic. I was intrigued by this beautiful plant because it smells like a blend of lavender, mint and anise. Using both the flowers and the leaves I created a Hyssop syrup which works well with a bit of lemon-lime soda, lemon, mint and of course whiskey.

Hyssop Mint Julep - Whiskey Muse

INGREDIENTS

2.0 oz Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve Canadian whisky
1.0 oz Hyssop Cordial**
Lemon-Lime Soda
Mint Leaves
Lemon

INSTRUCTIONS

In a julep glass filled with crushed ice add the hyssop syrup, whiskey, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Top with lemon-lime soda, stir and enjoy. Garnish with mint and a hyssop flower. The hyssop syrup has quite strong herbal flavours to it and therefore with the addition of lemon-lime soda it helps to create a better balance in the cocktail.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

**To make the hyssop cordial, add 1 cup of hyssop flowers and leaves to 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. On medium heat bring to a boil and then turn down to low heat and let simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Then through a fine strainer, strain mixture and get rid of the leaves and flowers. Refrigerate and enjoy!
