If you haven’t discovered the website formally known as Master of Malt yet, your life is about to become just that little bit more interesting.

The same company responsible for giving us the gin advent calendar, the Professor Cornelius Ampleforth range of experimental spirits (Bathtub Gin, Cold Distilled Absinthe, Rumbullion etc.) and the ability to blend our own whisky – are at it again. With clear signs pointing towards a company director with just the right balance of ADHD, OCD and a PHD, we introduce a spirits collection called – ‘Batshit Mental Ideas’…literally.

Here are a few of my favourite things;

Brown Drink – Batch 5 (40% abv)

In its bones, a blended ah, spirit. In detail…a totally batshit mental blend of every premium spirit (rum, Scotch, Irish, American, gin…) of every type (cask strength, vintage, 30 yo, white dog, Islay…) left over by the company when filling 50ml tasting vials for retail. I stupidly thought I’d count the list of component spirits but got board after 150. In estimation, it’s an accumulation of somewhere nearer 1000 different spirits! You can read the full list online if you’re really keen.

Anglo-Scottish-American Gin (67.5% abv)

I truly believed they invented this product just so they could use the word discombobulated in the description, it’s as it reads, a gin of three nations. Beginning as a Scottish gin cold-distilled under vacuum (as you do) from 100% malt spirit, it is then placed in ex American gin casks from FEW distillery in Illinois, aged in England and bottled at cask strength.

Cold-Infused, Cold-Distilled Coffee Spirit (41% abv)

As it says on the label, this is a pure luxury coffee spirit made from single estate beans from the Finca Limoncillo estate in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. To ensure the richest release of oil from the coffee, the beans are roasted no more than a week before the maceration and distillation process takes place. For anyone with as much obsession in coffee as me, you’ll be happy to learn the spirit is also available in a selection of single estates from Bolivia, Sumatra, Tanzania, Costa Rica and Ethiopia.

Unfortunately now discontinued, their collection also included a limited edition release of gins finished in barrels previously use to mature bitters, Negroni and Old Fashioned cocktails.

Retaining their reputation as one of the most pioneering spirit companies in the world, the team behind Master of Malt is helping to redefine the premium spirits category and more importantly, its modern consumer. While marketed with the words madness, mental and crazy, all of the products are the culmination of well thought out and executed ideas. No corners are cut anywhere in production with expensive and time consuming processes and packaging all contradicting anything that is “out of the brain of a crazy person”.

In a world dominated by the ‘big five’ global spirit companies, it’s refreshing to not only see someone successfully defining their own market, but clearly having fun doing it.
