In a modern-age where the Japanese can hold claim to producing one of the best whiskies in the world, I’d like to raise your attention to what’s going on in Scandinavia.

Produced at the privately owned Mackmyra Distillery outside of Gävle in Sweden, Midvinter has been produced entirely from Swedish barley and matured in American oak barrels before being finished in a collection of ex sherry, Bordeaux wine and even mulled wine (glühwine) casks. The result as the name suggests is a single malt with a mid winter spice followed by juicy red fruit and citrus notes. Bottled at a non chill filtered strength of 46.1% abv, the spirit may be a touch young and bold but far from lacking in either complexity or length.

Since the birth of the Macmyra distillery in 1999, the company has been awarded European Spirits Producer of the Year by the IWSC as well as a host of individual medals for their range of whiskies and liqueurs. And they’re not the only ones. According to online blog Whisky Saga, there are currently 10 distilleries in Sweden (one start-up on hold), 8 in Denmark, 4 in Norway, 2 in Finland and 2 on Iceland and all either dabble or all out dedicate their stills to whisky.

To put it simply, the Nordic are passionate about their whisky and with such a widely temperate climate and access to all major ingredients including their own native oak, they are well placed to add further global pressure to an already over stretched Scotch market. And I say bring it on!
