The bartender and book that started the popularity of the enjoyment of making, drinking and enjoying cocktails. The legendary ‘Professor’ Jerry Thomas was famously known to be the “Father of American Mixology” by creating the professional image that endorses the performing art of bar-tending.

The original book was published in 1862, that makes it 151 years old in 2013 so it is safe to say that its a very old book however it is best to learn the mistakes of history to prevent repeating it again. This means that Thomas’ book has the original and classic cocktail recipes that some are still popular today such as the developing Martinez (Martini predecessor); the refreshing Fizzes and the famous and most flair, the Blue Blazer that even the 18th president Ulysses Grant was impressed and gave the very bartender a cigar.

The book I have has been updated and modernize so that people in the 21st century can access to. It is a small and compact book filled with “Hints and Rules for Bartenders” and most importantly original recipes of cocktails but the measures and jargon were used in the 1800s such as pony, pounds and quarts; the ratios can be strong for the present drinkers as the early ice makers were not as cold as modern freezers so take caution and experiment with original cocktails.

The legendary Bar-tenders Guide by the famous Professor himself is still relevant today as he was back in those good old days as the book teachers the historic rules and classic cocktails from the very beginning so that knowledge could be passed down to passionate up-coming bartenders to understand the origins of bar-tending.
