Initially pitched as a first of its kind, the Laws Bonded Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey is an interesting whiskey offering from a craft distillery in Colorado that’s been gaining more and more steam. It’s awesome to see these folks growing and expanding, but I’m equally impressed by their ability to put facts before pride. Something several distilleries out there still need to learn.

After their initial email, they reached out to let me know they’d discovered/been alerted that Oregon Spirit Distillers already had a BiB Wheat Whiskey in the market. It’s nice to see companies taking a proactive approach to setting the record straight instead of just hoping no one notices. So, cheers to transparency and honesty.

Laws Bonded Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Law’s Words:

“The 100% Colorado-grown wheat from Colorado Malting Company comes from the unique terroir of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, which imparts aromas of mountain strawberries and orange marmalade that accentuate hints of alpine meadows and wildflower honey. Jasmine tea, sage and spruce tips fade into pink peppercorns, with crisp linen on the mouthfeel. The spirit finishes dry with a slight bitter, candied orange finish.”

Laws Bonded Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey Review: Overall and Score

An interesting wheat whiskey offering. The Aroma is a tad light and quite sweet, but it’s not bad; Palate is light and woody with a big herbal layer; Finish is short and herbaceous. It’s showing lots of promise, but the raw woody aspect pops up too much.

Laws Bonded Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey carries that “craft” profile through it, but not overpoweringly. There is a sense of maturity but it isn’t quite there yet. Seems like whiskeys coming from colder and/or drier climates than Kentucky and Indiana need even more time to mature than their Southern counterparts.

SCORE: 80/100 (B-)
