Miami: Dim Sum and Chinese Food at Blackbrick

One morning we woke up with brunch on our minds. Initially we tried to go somewhere on the Beach but the restaurant ended up stopping brunch service on Saturdays… forever. Eventually the idea for dim sum came to mind and a quick search led us to Blackbrick. It was a bit troublesome to get off the Beach and into Miami but we made it just as it opened and before the restaurant filled up.
I ordered a Bloody Mary straight away but with gin (Red Snapper) and was delighted to find a very meaty fried wonton as the garnish. Mmm, “fake” MSG rim.
Initially we were going in for a full on dumplings fest but I was distracted by the other offerings on the menu. I was told there wasn’t a lot of great Asian places but Blackbrick was leading the pack in both dim sum and other goodies.
So we got an order of steamed shrimp dumplings which were pretty good. I watched Chinese-speaking guys in the kitchen working away in the open kitchen and felt pretty happy with the traditional dumplings.
At Blackbrick, they have these “hand grab pancakes” which were basically flatbread topped with savories. They were kind of like a Chinese breakfast taco with egg and cumin chicken. After eating one, I was really stuffed but we had more coming. A lot more coming!
My friend wanted to get the seasonal vegetable and shrimp egg roll served with pumpkin sauce. Besides the traditional dumplings, there were these kind of wild variations that were super exciting. If I lived in Miami, I’d be back for the Peking duck and cinnamon bun waffle, shrimp and grits (cornmeal congee), the Chinese salt and pepper tater tots and the list goes on.
Once I saw the pork cheek dumplings, I was all about them. These like my fried dumpling garnish for my Bloody were super meaty. Again, these are stick-to-your-ribs sort of breakfast/brunch/dim sum. Maybe fast the night before because you’ll want to get more!
I’m always curious about dan dan noodles. This version featured thick noodles and a great sauce but it was also overwhelming how much sauce there was to noodles. More noodles, please!
I’m glad I got in the order of the cauliflower. Though it wasn’t even noon yet, I can always eat vegetables. These were extremely tender.
Blackbrick sent out a dish of lollipop kale. How brilliant! I like Brussels sprouts, I like kale. This is the love child.
There was so much more on the menu I wanted to try; the bacon fried rice with Duroc pork, Florida pink shrimp, chicken wings… or I guess I can get the Black platter which is like a pu pu platter with the aforementioned Florida pink shrimp, wings plus smacked cucumber salad, spare ribs, lamb chops, duck necks and egg rolls.
And more steamed dumplings. Always dumplings.
