Another Mixology Monday has come and gone, so now it is time for the roundup. Our theme was “Intercontinental” and the goal was to mix a cocktail, or cocktails, that have “ingredients” from at least three but up to seven continents. And, as we mentioned, the definition of  “ingredient” was pretty broad, so we hoped to see many cocktails that spanned the globe….including Antarctica.

mxmologo So how did everyone do?  Very, very well, IMHO. The cocktails, photos and the stories were great. We actually had many of the ingredients (should we be embarrassed about that?) and mixed a number of the drinks. Very tasty. And just as important, an excuse (motivation?) to try something new. Whenever we feel we may be getting into a slight cocktail “rut”, Mixology Monday snaps us out of it.

Feu-de-vie, one of our favorite booze blogs, covers six continents with the Giganta, a coffee-pineapple tiki-ish concoction with homemade Coffee-Macadamia Orgeat. Nice. We want some of that…

Next we get the Vegan Pisco Sour from Elana at Stir and Strain. She has lovely creations and her photos are some of the best we have seen. For this cocktail, not only do we get four continents, but some cool info on using beer as a substitute for egg whites in “foamy” cocktails. For vegans, good stuff. For us, a tasty drink. Everyone wins.

Amarula, the “Bailey’s of Africa” makes its first (but not its only) MxMo appearance in Swizzlestick’s Life is Beautiful cocktail. Lychee liqueur made it in as well. A truly global cocktail that hits six continents. Well done.

The good folks at Booze Nerds take advantage of a good name/story and global ingredients to cover seven continents with the Amundsen (nice historical reference guys!). More importantly we get a very creative drink with spirits, amaro, bitters, spice, a tea reduction / syrup and a port wine float. Gold Star.

The Straight Up, gives us another drink using Australian port and narrative license to cover seven continents with the ….and Antarctica. Again, we also see some tea and amaro in play for this beautiful aperitif-style cocktail. We certainly are intrigued with the mix of bitter, tannic, smokey and herbal ingredients. Gold Star.

Our Bay Area neighbors and frequent travelers BarFlySF, take us to five continents and then a few layers of hell as a bonus…seriously. They give us Dante’s Divinia and Dante’s Divinia Down Under, riffs on the Dante’s Paradise cocktail they discovered at Longman and Eagle’s in Chicago. And with some Habanero shrub involved- there will be some fire.

Out in Tennessee, Sass and Gin goes a slightly more traditional route with the Madison’s Revenge. This Manhattan variant shows that you can get to five or six continents quicker than you think. A little tuning of sweetener, spice or garnish and you have a global cocktail. Good work.

Our fearless leader Fred Yarm of Cocktail Virgin Slut pulls out a bottle of Van Der Hum, an African tangerine and spice liqueur, for a very spirituous, old-time cocktail the Daiqurbon. We expected to see a bit more Van Der Hum this MxMo, but since we couldn’t find any here in Norcal, we are glad somebody found some.

A Bar Above gives us a very entertaining video and recipe for the Seven Seas cocktail. They build this riff on the oft-maligned (but strangely durable) Long Island Iced Tea. The cocktail covers five or six continents and ends up tasting good. Bonus points for the video…

As expected, someone used Bundy, that “special” Australian rum. A World of Drinks gets to all seven continents with the ATS Conference, a boozy but intriguing mix of cognac, rum, bourbon, plum wine, wine reduction and bitters. The name comes from the Antarctic Treaty System. We love this kind of esoterica with our cocktails. Gold Star.

More thoroughly entertaining Antarctic trivia from Ginhound (we resemble that remark) and the Emperor Penguin Flip. Not only do we get seven continents and a tasty looking drink, but some excellent story. A guaranteed smile…worth a visit. Gold Star.

Our favorite tiki-philes, Rated R Cocktails gives us the Fog of Castle Talbot. This riff on a Fog Cutter and Long Island iced tea will not only get you to five or six continents, it will fill you with a big slug of booze along the way. Of course, like all good tiki drinks, this one may sneak up on you.

Leaving Antarctica to others, Root and Glass still manages to give us a four or five continents with the Magellan. And with its mix of rum, Swedish Punsch, lime and garam masala syrup, who needs a trip to the South Pole?

DrunkLab (love the name) goes way beyond the call and gives us a full slate of global drinks. We get the Pan Am (yup we sometimes sub Smith and Cross for Banks 5-island, too), The Emigre’, The Pearl of Tangier (think Morocco, lots of Morocco), and the Inherent Vice (another Amarula sighting). Maybe not seven continents, but bonus points for volume…

The Shorter Straw manages to get Antarctica into the Stars and Stripes cocktail, but takes a pass on Africa and Australia. (The Stars and Stripes was a plane that Admiral Byrd flew over the pole…good knowledge).  Regardless, we are quite happy with rum, calvados, yuzu and pineapple. Beautiful sage garnish, too…

Shake, Strain and Sip shows us that the simple path is still good to follow with the Thirsty Traveler. While this drink mostly sticks to Europe and the Americas, any cocktail with the creative mix of Old Tom Gin, Drambuie and Cynar feels like welcome territory.

Bartending Notes gives us another simple cocktail with Europe and the Americas at the fore, but if there ever was a global “cocktailian” it was Ernest Hemingway. So when we saw a Hemingway Daiquiri it brought us a smile. Not to mention that it is still a delightful sip. We may be mixing one this evening….

A Drink With Forrest… reminded us that Mixology Monday was also “Mezcal Monday” (we think every day should be Mezcal Monday followed by Tequila Tuesday and Wine Wednesday). His drink the World Traveler not only covers four continents but is the first use of turmeric in a cocktail that we have seen. Very cool and one more thing to try.

The Westeros Bartender tries out MxMo and goes to a few continents to make the Lamartine, a genever-based riff on a Cosmopolitian. Any time we see genever in a cocktail it gives us  hope for mankind. Now we just need to find some Ty-Ku liqueur. Hmm…

Our Bay Area compatriots at Fogged In Lounge (and yes we do get plenty of fog here in Norcal) gives us six continents in the Time of The Saison. This beautiful calvados, spice and beer cocktail (we expected to see a bit more beer this MxMo) has us looking for some Ommegang Hennepin.

And we will finish up with our creations. We went to Africa and played semi-successfully with Amarula in the Horn of Good Hope and then visited six continents for the very tasty creole cuisine-inspired Two Trios. Whew…what a long, strange trip it has been. Thanks all!
