I have to admit a deep and abiding love of shitty bears. Maybe it’s because I was raised in the Midwest, where for a good many decades a “microbrew” was Miller High Life. Maybe its because there’s a definite feeling of machismo when I’m drinking a Coors Light while working on my motorcycle that I just don’t get from the latest microbrew.

Or maybe, just maybe, it presents a challenge to create something wholly unique yet still just as delicious as anything else out there! Or at least passable, if you want to be a dick about it.

I really enjoy mixing with cheaper beers from the big boys, and since the “best” beer the convenience store near our house offers is Miller Lite, I decided to try some mixing. Here’s one of the better quick tipples we smashed together.

Molinero Lite

Molito Light | ® Cocktails, 365

Molito Light | ® Cocktails, 365

  • 2 oz Tequila Avion Blanco (or your preferred blanco)
  • 10 dashes orange bitters
  • 1 pint can of Miller Lite

Take a frozen beer glass and add the tequila and bitters to the bottom. Stir it well, and then roughly pour the beer down the side of the glass. Serve.

You can call it anything fancy you like – a tequila shandy, etc. – but it’s still kind of wonderful in its terribleness. The agave of the tequila takes some of the skunk off of the beer, and the bitters gives you some lovely depth you wouldn’t expect. Is it winning any awards? Certainly not, but it is wonderfully refreshing on a blistering 100+ degree day.
