Tomorrow is National Cachaça Day here in Brazil.

You can read a beautiful text about the date at this link.
Here follows five cocktails from Brazilian bartenders for you to enjoy!

The first is a soon to be São Paulo classic. It’s named after 1928 Mario de Andrade’s modernist novel.

Macunaíma

(Arnaldo Hirai – Boca de Ouro bar – São Paulo)

  • 1½oz gold Cachaça
  • 1oz simple syrup
  • ¾oz lime juice
  • ¼oz Fernet

Shake and double strain into a coupe or other small glass. No garnish.

Following next a Negroni-esque beach inspired cocktail. The name is a reference to the Sbagliato. Estrago means damage or something that went wrong.

Strago

(João Morandi – Recife – Pernod Ricard Mixologist)

  • 1oz white cachaça
  • 1oz sweet vermouth
  • 1oz campari
  • 1oz coconut water

Stir and strain over ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with both a lemon and an orange twist.

Following next a variation on the national classic Rabo de Galo with a local vermouth-esque beverage called Jurubeba.

If you can find the jurubeba seeds you might try this cocktail by combining a sweet vermouth with a jurubeba infused cachaça.

Rê Bordosa

(Kennedy Nascimento – Riviera Bar – São Paulo)

Stir and serve up. Garnish with a lime twist.

Enought with the aromatic numbers.

Following next a traditional spin on the caipirinha.

Caipirinha do Arlindo

(Caio Bonneau – Ubatuba – SP)

  • 2½oz Cachaça
  • ¾oz simple syrup
  • 1 rangpur lime (cutted in wedges)
  • 3 mandarin leaves

Add the lime, leaves and syrup to a rocks glass and muddle. Add cubed ice, the cachaça and stir. Just like you would make a caipirinha.

To finish it up a recipe of my own creation. Making tribute to the Colonial Café where countryside people feast early morning around a table full of fruits, cakes, jams and all sorts of delicious brazilian food.
