Bourbon Old Fashioned

It’s Friday! And I couldn’t be happier about that. It’s also nearly the end of National Bourbon Heritage Month, so I thought an Old Fashioned round-up of recipes would be just the thing to get the weekend started off right. While there is much debate over the proper recipe & technique for making an Old Fashioned, I think it’s a great excuse to sample a few recipes.

Here are few to try:

  • Liquor.com’s recipe leaves the muddled fruit question unanswered.
  • The recipe I shared on Bourbon & Banter for a Bourbon Old Fashioned circa 1964 features Woodford Reserve and lots of muddled fruit.
  • Martin Doudoroff’s Old Fashioned 101, leaves out the fruit and adds a twist.
  • The New Fashioned Old Fashioned by Jens Kerger is a very interesting variation on the classic recipe using  English Orange Marmalade and a burned cinnamon stick.
  • Here are some more variations on the theme from Serious Eats.

Do you muddle the fruit or use it as a garnish? Or do you garnish with a twist? Do you even use a garnish? Rye or Bourbon or? Do you have a favorite recipe? Tell me all about it in the comments.

If you have a few minutes today, please go raise a toast to Bourbon and help Bourbon & Banter out with their goal to get #bourbon trending on Twitter today.

Have a great weekend. It’s about time to go get muddled!
