In case you missed it, last week was Negroni Week. It's an annual celebration put on by Imbibe magazine and Campari, during which drinkers the world over pay homage to the classic Italian cocktail (if you've never had one, treat yourself to our classic Negroni recipe) and participating bars raise money for charities of their choice. We're big fans and annual participants, but come Monday each year our livers are predictably unhappy with us.

As such, we've unofficially designated the week after Negroni Week as Hangover Cure Week. Most medical professionals would advise, you know, "not drinking" as the best remedy, but in the wise words of our friend Sterling Archer, "I'm scared that if I stop all at once, the cumulative hangover will literally kill me."

So, since we have to wake up and do our jobs in the meantime, we've settled on the Irish Coffee as this year's treatment of choice. It's a straightforward recipe, consisting of just 3-4 ingredients: Irish whiskey, simple syrup (we like to use brown sugar syrup, which is just as easy to make), black coffee, and, optionally, unsweetened whipped cream.

True aficionados, like those at San Francisco's famous Buena Vista Café, use aged, frothed cream, but we figure if you're struggling with a hangover you probably won't have the patience to make any yourself. Also, you don't need to use the most expensive whiskey in the world, as it gets a bit lost in the strong bitterness of the coffee. A nice, mid-range Irish whiskey will do the trick just fine.

If the warm weather of early summer has put you off hot cocktails, you're welcome to stick with some frostier tall drinks (this Moscow Mule recipe comes to mind). But as far as we're concerned, nothing beats the creamy, caffeinated goodness of an Irish Coffee when you need a pick-me-up.
