Spirit Focus - Whisky - Lot no. 40 Single Copper Pot Still Rye - Suzanne Long's tasting notes

Longitude has a lot of excellent whiskies and rums from around the world, and our specific focus with whisky is to share excellent whiskies that are often a new and welcome discovery. In that vein, We have a Canadian whisky collection that is larger than most people expect, and we're proud to serve some exquisite drams from our northerly neighbors. Many people don't go to Canadian whisky as a first choice, but at Longitude we think that's a shame, and Lot no. 40 proves us very right indeed.

Lot no. 40 Single Copper Pot Still Rye is produced by Corby Distillers in Ontario, and is the brainchild of retired Hiram Walker master blender David Doyle and Dr. Don Livermore, wood specialist and master blender at Corby. They worked together to create what has been hailed as the "Black Orchid of Canadian Whisky, the quintessential Canadian rye," by CanadianWhisky.org. This gorgeous whisky continues to win awards, including the 2016 Whisky of the Year at the Canadian Whisky awards. When recommending a Canadian dram, this is my go to choice.

A 100% rye whisky, this is a blend of 90% rye grain and 10% malted rye. It is distilled on a copper pot still and bottled at 43%. It has a nose like Dad's Christmas whisky. Christmas hard candy, sour rye, dry sweet hay and faint brine lead through furniture polish to mixed fruit, apple skin and red pear, then huge baked rye bread. The taste starts with a rye pepperiness that leads to sweet and sour, then faint bitterness and cinnamon leading to chalk, hints of oak and faint char. The finish is warm but pleasant and lingers developing into full on sour rye.

I love this whisky and highly recommend it. Come into Longitude and try some for yourself!
