While cognac may conjure images of old men nursing snifters around a fire, there's no wrong way to drink cognac. It's a versatile spirit that can be sipped neat or mixed, and the latter is exactly what's happening here. Los Angeles bartender Naomi Schimek has concocted the below craft cocktail recipe which pairs cognac with its apple-based cousin, calvados. Accented with sweet honey and tart lemon, it's a simple four-part drink that's easy to make at home. Here's how:

FOXTROT

1 oz. Cognac Park VS

1 oz. calvados

0.75 oz. lemon juice

0.75 oz. honey syrup (2 parts honey, 1 part water)

Add all the ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice. Shake, and strain into a chilled cocktail coupe. Garnish with a thin slice of apple (and grated cinnamon, if desired).
