The Old Fashioned cocktail dates back to the mid to late 1800’s and remains to this day one of the most popular whiskey cocktails. Although many variations exist, at Blackberry Farm, we like to stay as true to the original recipe as possible. It requires a delicate balance of bitters and sugar. In addition, muddling an orange instead of a lemon brings out the caramel flavor. Bourbon is typically used in this cocktail, however, with the reemergence of craft cocktails, Rye Whiskey is becoming more popular. Three solid cubes of ice with a splash of soda water will open up and soften this classic cocktail just enough to ensure the first sip is incredible while the last will ensure the desire for another.

The Old Fashioned
2 oz. of Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
1 Orange Slice
1 Rough Cut Sugar Cube
Angostura Bitters
Splash of Soda Water

Place a cocktail napkin over the top of an empty rocks glass. In the center of the cocktail napkin, place a rough-cut sugar cube and cover it with bitters. Allow the bitters to soak into the sugar, and then, place the bitter soaked sugar cube in the rocks glass. Place the orange slice over the sugar cube and muddle together. When muddling, do not hit the rind of the orange peel. It contains natural bitter qualities that could make the cocktail taste too bitter. Add three large cubes of ice into the rocks glass, and then add the Rye Whiskey. Top with a splash of soda water. Finally, using a bar spoon or stir stick, stir three times pulling from the bottom of the rocks glass to the top.
