George Washington is arguably the greatest historical figure in U.S. history. He was a visionary, lead the Continental Army to victory during the Revolutionary War, a founding father and our first president. Through these accomplishments alone he has earned his spot in history.

But few realize he was also a successful brewer, whiskey distiller (he was at one time the largest whiskey distiller in the U.S. producing over $120,000 worth of whiskey in 1799), a cocktail connoisseur and one of America's original mixologists.

So for this Holiday Roundup we honor our first president, his contributions to the founding of our great nation and his time as a brewer and distiller, by presenting his original eggnog recipe which still survives today.

Beware, this isn't your everyday eggnog recipe as it includes brandy, rye whiskey, rum and sherry and was known to be "a stiff drink that only the most courageous were willing to try." Consider yourselves warned.

Ingredients:

One quart cream, One quart milk, One dozen tablespoons sugar, One pint brandy, 1/2 pint rye whisky, 1/2 pint Jamaican rum, 1/4 pint sherry eggs*

*The number of eggs was not listed in his recipe but we have found a dozen eggs to work well.

Directions: "Mix liquor first, then separate yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well. Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Let set in cool place for several days, tasting frequently."

So there it is, George Washington's very own Eggnog recipe, will you be "courageous" enough this holiday season?
