Paul and I are both James Bond film fans, with Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan having been our favorite Bonds until Daniel Craig appeared and completely revamped the Bond-scape in Casino Royale, the second big-screen realization of Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel of the same name.

With Jason Bourne having been on the scene for some time already, it was time James Bond stepped it up. A romantic James Bond? With feelings, martial arts skills and a sense of humor? And not only that, he’s more discerning about his martinis than any Bond we’ve ever seen.

His whirlwind romance with Vesper Lynd, though tragic, is beautifully captured in his creation of a cocktail which he later names for her as, “The Vesper… because once you’ve tasted it, you won’t drink anything else.”

“Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?” — Casino Royale, Chapter 7

  • 3 oz of Gordon’s Gin
  • 1 oz of vodka
  • 0.5 oz measure Kina Lillet
  • lemon peel for garnish

Oh yes, pour into a large champagne goblet. Got it?
