When Shakespeare’s Iago quips, “Virtue! a fig!”, he implied that one's character is not innate, but the byproduct of pure whim.
So what does that say about the fig?
Is it the mere gold standard for all that is trivial?
Absolutely not!
A Fig Cocktail With Virtue
Here we honor the fruit of the gods with a libation of gallantry and romance.
A tequila and citrus offering that introduces other classic Shakespearean motifs- wine and roses (rioja and rose water to be exact), rounding off the fig’s dulcitude with floral and tannic notes.
The end result is a grand fig cocktail that is- dare we say – virtuous.
VIRTUOUS FIG
2 oz. Tequila (Reposado or Añejo)
2 Tbsps. of Fig Preserves or 1 1/2 oz. of Fig Puree
2 oz. Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
3/4 oz. Rose Water
1 Tbsp. Rioja or Tempranillo Wine
1 Common Fig
DIRECTIONS:
Add tequila, juices, rose water and fig mixture in an cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake contents until fig mixture is fully dissolved and proper dilution is achieved. Strain into iced glass.
Optional: a quick stir before adding ice to shaker guarantees incorporation of fig mixture.
GARNISH:
Using a bar spoon, float wine over top of cocktail (video below) and garnish with a sliced cross section of a fig.
