In honor of National Drinking Straw Day, a holiday celebrated this week on January 3rd, it's time to reconsider the traditional plastic straw served with many cocktails. While a straw might be necessary to sip your mojito or margarita, the single-use plastic presents a big problem for the environment. Millions and millions of straws end up in landfills, waterways, and other habitats. The plastic pollutes the earth and can be harmful for animals and sea life. Instead of grabbing a single-use plastic straw, consider these alternatives:

1. Biodegradable Straws from HAY! Straws, $8
These straws are made from the stem of the wheat plant (but are still gluten free!). This pack has 100 straws, so this is a great option if you entertain frequently.

2. Silver Metal Straw from Sand Cloud, $4
Use this metal straw over and over again. It comes with its own cleaner and carrying bag, and a portion of sales goes back to charities that protect against ocean plastic pollution. The metal straws would make a sleek addition to a minimalist bar cart.

3. Stainless Steel and Silicon Straws from Kleen Kanteen, $9.99
The removable food-grade silicon tip on these straws is comfortable and keeps the straw clean. Perfect for when you bring drinks on-the-go.

4. Reusable Plastic Straws from Kikkerland, $5.99
While these straws are still made from plastic, they are meant to be reusable so you can sip, wash, repeat. The fun patterns are bright, and will make a colorful splash on your home bar.
