Purple Florentine: a twist on a classic drink

In honor of Negroni Week, I created a simple variation on this Italian classic. I feel like the whole point of the Negroni was to make a simple, refreshing cocktail of substance that can be used as an aperitif or digestif. With that in mind, I kept the same method of making it, but only replacing one ingredient. Namely, I just swapped out the vermouth for creme de violette. Aside from producing a perfect symmetry of sweet and bitter flavors, it also makes a lovely hue of purple. So it was only natural that I call this a Purple Florentine.

Purple Florentine

  • 1 oz Campari

  • 1 oz New Amsterdam Gin

  • 1 oz Rothman and Winter Creme de Violette

You will want to get a bar spoon and mixing glass halfway filled with ice. Add all three ingredients and stir until thoroughly mixed and chilled. Strain into a glass of your choice, served up. I personally used a sorbet glass because I’m classy like that. I may or may not have been wearing a tuxedo when drinking this.

I personally enjoy cocktails with less than 3 or 4 ingredients. They take next to no time to make and they’re great for just sipping. So if you like the classic Negroni, then you’ll like this simple twist on the original. Drink up and happy Negroni Week to one and all!
