Scotch whisky hero The Macallan are set to be given a brand new 100 million pound distillery makeover by brand owner Edrington.

Located in Craigellachie on Speyside, the development will see a new immersive visitors exhibition, gallery, cafe and an expansion of production and warehouse storage enabling an output of 15 million litres a year compared to the 9.5 of the existing plant. The distilleries new iconic design has been commissioned by the same team behind London’s Millenium Dome and is set to utilise a natural “rolling roofscape” with views overlooking the Macallan Estate and River Spey. With all planning now approved the ribbon is set to be cut on the new distillery by 2017.

The Scotch whisky sector has seen huge international growth over the last ten years with an average export value of £135 returning to the UK GDP every second [Off Licence News - Dec, 2013].

As impressive as Edringtons investment may sound, global drinks giant Diageo announced in 2012 a £1 billion investment into the development of their Scotch range over a five year period.

Meanwhile in other news, The Moray Council who approved Macallan’s large Speyside development is also pushing for the establishment of the UK’s first space port not far from the distillery. If so, you can imagine the PR angles available for future Macallan malts – cut with comet water and matured in zero gravity…? Ok too much, one bold step at a time.
