DrinkWire is Liquor.com’s showcase for the best articles, recipes and reviews from the web’s top writers and bloggers. In this post, Cocktail Detour offers a simple mezcal cocktail.
Our love for mezcal continues to grow, and in this Tonic Margarita we are only mixing it with lime juice, tonic syrup and simple syrup.
There is a noticeable difference between tequila and mezcal. The latter one has more of a smoky profile, not completely unlike a smoky whisky. It’s a really good cocktail ingredient which this particular drink proves.
We photographed the cocktail outside while it was raining. We thought the wet surface on the balcony table looked good and wanted to make use of that as a backdrop. But we knew we only had a few seconds to nail the shoot as the rain was diluting all that loveliness in the glass, one raindrop at a time. We got some craft tonic syrup from a local startup, Swedish Tonic. This is nothing like the of the major brands off the shelf tonics, it is much more flavorful and interesting.
So it might not be the sharpest photos we have taken, but we hope it still showcases what a wonderful and versatile ingredient mezcal is.

If you like this but don’t have tonic syrup at home you can try the Mezcal Margarita we made some time ago. We have also tried to make tonic syrup ourself, its fun but you need to find som cinchona bark to get the tart flavor. If you are a DIY and know Swedish and here is the recipe we used before
